To maintain the continued competency and validity of the Balloon Instructor certificate, you are required to attend the instruction flight under supervision of senior balloon instructor within at least last 9 years.
The aim of the instruction flight under supervision is to confirm continued balloon flight instructor competency to exercise the privileges of FI(B) as required by BFCL.360(a)(2).
The FI(B) instruction flight under supervision is arranged to ensure that you as an FI(B) are being supervised and demonstrating your instructor competences to the senior balloon instructor. Your competences are assessed both on the ground and during at least one flight.
As an applicant for Balloon instructor flight under supervision, you have to be at least 18 years old and be a holder of the Balloon Pilot License and valid Hot-air balloon class rating with privileges for the respective group of balloons. In addition, you have to hold the balloon flight instructor - FI(B) certificate with the privileges for the hot-air balloon class and the group of the hot-air balloons in which the training flight will be completed (usually a Group A or Group B)
The duration of the training event is just one flight and takes aprpoximately 4 hours in total including the briefings.
During the flight training part of the FI(B) flight under supervision you will be required to demonstrate to the senior balloon instructor your competency to teach and explain the flying exercises associated with your FI(B) privileges. The duration of the flight is approximately 1 hour.
The briefing and de-briefing is a crucial part of the instructor flight under supervision. It is integrated into the long briefing of the flight exercise and taken prior to the training flight. You will be required to explain the pre-flight preparation and flying exercises which will be practiced during the training flight in the balloon.
During the flight training part of the FI(B) flight under supervision you will be required to demonstrate to the senior balloon instructor your competency to teach and explain the flying exercises associated with your FI(B) privileges. The duration of the flight is approximately 1 hour.
